My hour commute this morning turned into 4 hours when I found myself stuck in complete gridlock traffic in Santa Barbara for 3+ hours. I completely missed my only class of the day, and even missed the later section. It was insane! An armed protester took up residence at one of the overpasses in SB, so the 101 was shut down.
The side streets were no better. But I can't help but wonder if I might have been able to get to school sooner if I knew the area better. I was always a little afraid that this might happen, but I'm not sure what to do about it. I guess I could wander around the streets with a map? Or study maps to see where they go? I managed to find my way back to the open area of the freeway from the side street I was on, but I could have gotten terribly lost. And thus trapped in yuppy hippieville forever!
As you can imagine, my day was completely shot. The only reason why I didn't turn back around and drive home was because I spent hours doing my homework yesterday, and I damn well have to get credit for it. So all I did upon arriving at school was turn in my homework to my teacher's mailbox and had lunch. Guh. And I usually enjoy Mondays lately. I like the quick commute home and the extra hours I get to spend with my family. I feel like I don't have enough time with Sam as it is (even though, yes, I have more time with him than before - but it's still not enough, dammit!), and the hours I wasted in agonizing 5mph - when we were moving - traffic makes me feel aggravated.
I think, since my classes start later next quarter, I'll try taking the train to SB. I'd depend on their schedule, but at least there's no chance of getting stuck in traffic like this again.

I'm still wondering if there will be protesters and demonstrators at the voting booths. I guess you'll be able to answer that question tomorrow. If there were a place where protesters would be, it would be at a university voting place.
